Celebrity Cannabis Boom: Snoop Dogg’s 2Pac Tribute Line Hits Shelves

The marijuana industry is seeing an influx of celebrity influence, as famous people from all walks of life leverage their clout to profit from cannabis. At the same time, this “star power” is helping to mainstream weed.

Latest case in point: Snoop Dogg, a long-time advocate and user of marijuana, opened his first licensed cannabis dispensary store in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 14. The retail outlet is designed as a tribute to deceased rapper 2Pac.

Snoop Dogg has long been synonymous with cannabis culture, intertwining it with his personal and professional identity. His latest venture, S.W.E.D. (Smoke Weed Every Day), is a LA-based dispensary that not only sells cannabis but also pays homage to Snoop’s illustrious career and his late colleague 2Pac. The store features a smoke-proof DJ booth for Snoop to mix tracks, memorabilia from his time with Death Row Records, and graffiti art quoting his lyrics.

Snoop’s move into the legal marijuana market is a significant milestone, but he is not alone in this space.

Celebrities who have ventured into cannabis entrepreneurship include Martha Stewart, Seth Rogen, Jay-Z, Whoopi Goldberg, Willie Nelson, Mike Tyson, Tommy Chong, Melissa Etheridge, Montel Williams, Chelsea Handler, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Anita Thompson, the widow of “gonzo” journalist Hunter S. Thompson. These public figures often openly discuss their marijuana use, aligning their brands with the growing acceptance of cannabis and advocating for its legalization.

Martha Stewart’s cannabidiol (CBD) products are part of her partnership with Canopy Growth (NSDQ: CGC), the Canada-based cannabis company that enjoys the backing of U.S. alcohol beverage giant Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ). Canopy also produces rapper Snoop Dogg’s “Leafs by Snoop” cannabis brand.

I recently saw Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg on a national television talk show, joking about smoking pot. That’s a sign of marijuana’s normalization, if I ever saw one.

These celebrity entrepreneurs are not just capitalizing on the market but also creating jobs, especially vital as the post-pandemic recovery strives for traction. By shining their star wattage on weed, they enhance the legitimacy and appeal of the cannabis industry.

Snoop’s new dispensary stands out with its curated marijuana selections, including a line from Death Row Records Cannabis honoring 2Pac. This tribute is fitting, as 2Pac was a close friend and the person who introduced Snoop to blunts.

This isn’t Snoop’s first foray into the cannabis industry; he launched Leafs By Snoop in Colorado back in 2015. His deep-rooted connection to marijuana was humorously acknowledged by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who declared Snoop’s birthday, October 20, as the “new high holiday.”

Beyond his business ventures, Snoop Dogg has been a vocal advocate for cannabis reform. He has pushed for policy changes in sports, particularly the NBA, to allow players to use cannabis for its medical benefits. Snoop has emphasized that marijuana is a safer alternative to opioids for pain management, an issue he continues to champion.

Known for his prolific consumption, Snoop claims he smokes 81 blunts a day. He even hired a personal blunt roller for a reported $50,000 annually. (As Frank Sinatra sang: “Nice work if you can get it.”)

As more celebrities dive into the cannabis market, the mainstream acceptance of marijuana continues to grow. This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards recognizing the benefits and potential of cannabis, spearheaded by influential figures such as Snoop Dogg.
