Whether you’re moving or just looking to spruce up your home or get rid of clutter, buying and selling furniture can be a bit of a pain. Big, bulky, and heavy, furniture just isn’t easy to send in the mail, so selling it online or locally can be a time-consuming process. The good news, however, is that there are plenty of great places to buy and sell secondhand furniture hassle-free both online and locally.

New to the used furniture re-sale process? Worry not, we have your ultimate guide to selling your unwanted home furnishings, complete with information on the best places to get cash for your furniture with ease.

Selling Used Furniture Online vs. Locally?

If you’re not particularly tech-savvy, the idea of selling used furniture online might seem a bit daunting. So, you might be wondering if it’s better to just try and sell it locally instead. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both methods:

Pros of Online

Selling furniture online has the major advantage of connecting you with a potentially huge audience of people that are interested in used furniture. Therefore, when you use the internet to sell items, you have many more potential buyers than if you simply stuck to your local neighborhood. This is particularly important if you’re looking to sell something that’s rare, unique, or high-end because you might struggle to find a local buyer in your town.

Cons of Online

While selling furniture online does provide you with a much larger audience, you do have to keep in mind that selling things online can be tricky. First and foremost, if you sell an item to someone that lives 3,000 miles away, you’ll have to organize some sort of shipping method. When it comes to furniture, this can get expensive and annoying very quickly.

Alternatively, if you chose to arrange a pick-up with someone that heard about your furniture online, you have to be very careful with when and where you chose to meet them. One should always arrange to meet up with a buyer in a very public place to protect oneself from people with bad intentions. Never meet with a potential buyer at your home.

Pros of Local

If selling things online isn’t your thing, you can always choose to sell locally. Organizing a garage sale or selling/consigning your item to a local used furniture store is a simple way to get furniture off of your hands without having to deal with shipping and listing fees. Selling locally tends to be simpler and easier, especially for the less tech-savvy among us.

Cons of Local

However, selling furniture locally means you’re limiting your audience and your potential buyers. Plus, if you only sell locally, you’re likely to make less money off of your furniture because of high fees at used furniture stores and consignment shops.

How Much Should You Sell Your Used Furniture For?

Deciding how much to sell your used furniture for can be a big challenge, especially if it’s your first time. While sellers generally look to make as much money as possible off of their items, it’s important to remember that pricing an item too high will stop people from wanting to buy it.

If your furniture item is in very good condition, many people choose to simply take 20-30% off of the retail price. However, it’s often a good idea to go online and check out other similar items to see what they’re currently selling for to get an idea of what you might want to charge.

That being said, if you’re selling something that’s rare, vintage, or unusual, you might not be able to find a comparable product to use as a guideline. In these instances, it might be worth hiring a professional appraiser to give you an idea of what your item is worth.

This is an especially good idea if you think your furniture is worth more than $1000. In these instances, it might be worth using one of the many web platforms that offer appraisal services, like Viyet, to do this for you.

How To Get The Most Money For Your Used Furniture?

When selling anything, there is always a right way and a wrong way to do it. Here’re my top tips for getting the most money.

Get Quality Pictures

Thankfully this is rather easy these days given almost all smartphones have a pretty good camera in them. Just make sure the furniture is well lit when taking the picture. Light is EVERYTHING when it comes to photography, and it will make a huge difference in the photo. Trust me.

Write Benefit Driven Description

Most people write boring factual descriptions of their products, which results in terrible response rates. My advice would be to brainstorm all the reasons why your old piece of furniture is a steal and squash and potential objections someone might have buying 2nd hand furniture in your description.

Establish Seller Leverage

In order to get the most for your furniture (and this may seem obvious) you should list the item on multiple marketplaces so you have “seller leverage”. With multiple interested buyers you can up the price on your old furniture. Most folks will list it on one marketplace and sell it at the first instant.

Of course, if you need cash asap, you may not have time to do this, but if possible multiple listing will almost always result in you getting more money.

25 Places To Sell Used Furniture For Cash?

There are a whole lot of different options out there for people looking to sell their used and vintage furniture. But, with hundreds of options to choose from, it’s understandable if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities. So, to get you started, here are my 25 of the best places to sell used furniture for cash fast, both online and locally:

1. Facebook Marketplace (And Groups) (My #1 Pick)

The Facebook Marketplace is a relatively new addition to the social media giant’s services but is my favorite option for quickly selling used furniture in your local area. It’s quick, simple, and completely listing fee-free to post a listing to your local area and make money. You can also look to join local buy and sell groups on Facebook to find others in your area that are interested in used furniture.

However, like, Craigslist, anyone who uses Facebook Marketplace needs to be careful about who they’re selling to and where they choose to meet up. When selling on an online marketplace, such as Facebook, you’re in charge of arranging payment, too. So, if you plan to meet up with someone to sell your furniture through Facebook, it’s best to get paid only in cash and to meet up in a very public place.

buy-sell-trade-furniture-facebook

For example, I had an old lightly used road bike I no longer needed. I listed it on the Facebook marketplace and got about 65% for what I paid for it. I just met the buyer at a 7-11 near my house and the deal was done. Easy.

The one thing I like about Facebook, is that you can (and should) lookup their personal profile before agreeing to the deal. This little extra bit of vetting can provide a bit of mental relief that this person is a real person with a real life. in fact, if they have friends in common, you could also message the friend and ask about the potential buyer to get 100% assurance.

2. Craigslist

Perhaps the most popular online classified site ever, Craigslist is a great starting place for anyone looking to offload some furniture relatively quickly and locally. Posting a listing on Craigslist is quick and pretty easy, so you don’t have to be a tech genius to get it done. The best part? There’s no listing fee, so it’s a great way to make money off your furniture.

However, Craigslist provides no support for buyers and sellers on their marketplace. It’s up to you to arrange payment and a pick-up point for your furniture if you use this platform, so you have to be wary of potential scammers. Be sure to post high-quality photos of the actual items your selling so the buyer knows exactly what they’re paying for. Plus, be sure to only meet with people in very public places to keep yourself safe when selling things online.

3. eBay

An incredibly popular online auction website, eBay is still a great place to sell used furniture and other goods. While eBay started as a place to auction things on the internet, you can now also choose to sell your furniture at a fixed price, which is great for selling new furniture (like that unwanted Ikea desk you mistakenly bought) for close to the retail price.

eBay offers a wide range of consumer and seller protection services, which is helpful if you’re nervous about selling things online for the first time. When you use their platform, you can use their payment processing services, which allows buyers to pay by credit card.

However, while it’s generally free to list items on eBay, you will have to pay about 10% in transaction fees when you use the website. But, eBay also makes it easy for you to quickly ship items or arrange for pick-up at an eBay-approved location.

4. OfferUp

OfferUp is a desktop and smartphone app that connects people looking to sell furniture to potential buyers. Basically, when using OfferUp, all you need to do is take quality photos of your furniture, write a description, and post your location to get your listing out for public consumption.

Posting a listing via OfferUp is free to do, but when a item sells, you’ll be responsible for shipping and service fees, if applicable. Thankfully, the app tells you what fees are relevant to you when you post the item, so there are no surprises with OfferUp. Oh, and with this app, potential buyers can give you a counteroffer on the sale price and you can choose whether or not to accept it for a quick sale.

5. Letgo

Similar to OfferUp, Letgo is a website and smartphone application that allowed you to quickly sell used furniture. The key with Letgo is to take really good photos of your items because the platform organizes and displays listings like a photo gallery. So, to attract potential buyers, you’ll want some stunning photos.

Plus, Letgo lets anyone that clicks on one of your items to see everything you have for sale, so it’s quick and easy to make money on your unwanted furnishings.

6. Shopify

Shopify is a popular online store platform that’s a good option for anyone that is interested in getting into the used furniture business. So, while it’s not recommended for someone that just wants to offload one couch, it’s a nice way to get a new side hustle selling furniture.

It’s quite easy to get started on Shopify if you use one of their templates to get your e-commerce website up and running. Do keep in mind, though, that they charge a monthly fee to use their services, so this is best for people looking to start an actual online store.

7. Trove

Trove is a smartphone app that allows people to buy and sell any sort of used household appliances, including furniture. It’s sort of like a digital yard sale where people can search for what they want by city or zip code, which is great for cutting down on shipping costs.

Making a listing on Trove is free, but you will have to pay 10% in selling fees after you close the deal. While this is more than you’d pay on Craigslist, Trove’s commission fees are quite low.

8. Bonanza

Bonanza is a Google-integrated e-commerce platform that lets you easily create a storefront to sell old furniture and other similar items. Since Bonanza is integrated with Google, it has better visibility when people do a simple google search to look for a piece of furniture online, which is good for people looking to sell quickly.

Do keep in mind, though, that Bonanza charges commission fees, which are calculated based on the final selling price of your item.

9. Remoov

If you don’t have time to clean up your old furniture, Remoov just might be what you’re looking for. Remoov will come to your home and take away quite literally everything you don’t want and then sell it for you.

Using Remoov’s services is quite simple, as you just need to take photos of your furniture pieces, send them in for review, and then schedule a pick up with the team. Then, Remoov will either sell your furniture and give you 50% of the profits or donate any unsold items to charity. What could be better?

10. Bookoo

Bookoo is an online yard sale and classified site that’s specifically designed to connect people in particular geographic areas, like New York City or New Jersey. The platform acts as a small scale kind of social media where you can quickly make money by selling furniture and other similar items on the cheap.

11. 1stdibs

If you have vintage or high-end furniture in good condition, Istdibs might be your go-to marketplace. 1stdibs is a popular site among galleries, collectors, and interior designers that are looking for pieces of furniture that are unique and not like what you’d find at ikea.

Often, people are selling designer furniture on 1stdibs and are expecting to make some good money by doing so, which is why the platform charges quite high fees. In addition to a monthly fee to be a seller, there’s also a 15% commission fee and a 3% credit card processing fee for sales on 1stdibs. Alternatively, you can head into their New York City showroom to check out other designer pieces that are on display!

12. Etsy

Although Etsy is known as a handmade crafts platform, it’s also a great site for selling vintage, cute, and quirky furniture. Generally, though, unless your furniture is unique, antique, or handcrafted, it’s not going to get far with Etsy’s regular buyers.

But, if you do have something you think Etsy buyers will love, it’s easy to open an Etsy shop and start selling your items. With Etsy, buyers and sellers both get payment protection, but there are some fees associated with the website. Individual listings cost about $0.20 and there’s a 5% transaction fee, as well as a payment processing fee for using PayPal.

13. Chairish

Vintage furniture lovers everywhere flock to Chairish, where they can find high-end unique furniture to really spruce up their home. So, the company makes it easy to connect sellers with buyers looking to pay top-dollar for their furniture pieces.

As you can imagine, though, any upscale furniture website charges some hefty fees and Charish is no exception You can choose from a number of different selling plans on the site, but you can expect to pay about 20% commission for items up to $2,500 and substantially less for more expensive pieces.

14. Route 66 Furniture

Route 66 Furniture is a full-service market place for furniture sellers in Southern California. If you have something you want to sell, you simply take photos of the furniture items and email a description to the company. Within one business day, they’ll get in touch with you and find a good time to coordinate a pickup of your items.

From there, your furniture is brought to the company’s warehouse where they take care of the whole selling process. In exchange, they keep 50% of the final selling price, but you get a hassle-free way to make money.

15. Apartment Therapy Bazaar

Apartment Therapy Bazaar is an online marketplace that specializes in designer and vintage furniture. Listing an item on the site is free, but you can pay to “boost” your furniture to get it more exposure for just $1 an item. It’s also easy to import an Etsy listing into the Apartment Therapy Bazaar to get you more exposure and more chances of making money off your old furniture.

16. AptDeco

AptDeco is a used furniture website that’s specifically for items that are in particularly good condition. It’s free and easy to list an item on the website. Plus, AptDeco’s website even enhances your listing within 24 hours of uploading it by editing your photos and adding in extra details about the item to make it more attractive to potential buyers.

The catch? AptDeco charges a 23% commission fee, which is a bit high. But, you do get paid within two to five business days after your furniture is delivered to the buyer!

17. Sotheby’s Home

Anyone looking to sell high-end designer furniture should take a look at Sotheby’s Home. Sotheby’s offers an online platform where you can sell premium home furniture to buyers that are willing to pay top dollar for your items.

However, Sotheby’s process is a bit more complex because they need all of their items to meet a certain standard. The team at Sotheby’s Home will review your items before you can sell them and then they’ll work to match you with potential buyers. Your items need a minimum retail price of $1000 each and Sotheby’s takes a 50% commission for their efforts.

18. eBid

Very similar both in function and style to eBay, eBid is an auction and fixed-price platform to sell any item. Unlike eBay and other sites, though, they have very low fees (just 3%) and allow you to also sell your items on Amazon for more exposure.

19. Consignment Stores

Consignment stores are similar to used furniture stores. But, instead of selling your item to the shop, you simply give it to them to sell in exchange for payment when the furniture is finally sold to a customer. This is a good option if you want to get furniture out of your house quickly, but you’ll often make less than you would’ve if you sold the item on your own.

20. Antique Stores

If you have some unique vintage and antique furniture at home, your local antique store might be interested in buying it off of you in exchange for store credit or cash money. Generally, you won’t make too much in these stores, but at least you’ll get your furniture out of your home and in a storefront where it can find a new owner relatively quickly.

21. Local Newspaper

Posting an advertisement or classified ad in a local newspaper is still a decent way to find a buyer for your used furniture, especially if you live in a small town. While we wouldn’t recommend contacting The New York Times about getting a listing for your couch, a local paper will probably be happy to advertise your items or your upcoming estate sale for a small fee.

22. Yard Sale/Garage Sale/Estate Sale

The time-honored tradition of holding a yard sale is perhaps the most common way that people used to sell furniture. While the practice is fading quickly with the advent of online marketplaces and furniture-selling apps, a yard sale is a simple way to make money off of unwanted items.

Since most yard sales are cash-only, you don’t lose any money in payment processing fees or commissions, but you do have to invest your time in setting up the sale and hanging around for customers. But, if you have a lot to sell, an estate sale just might be the most time and cost-effective option for selling your items locally.

23. Used Furniture Stores

There are plenty of used furniture stores out there that are looking to buy your old furniture. By selling your items to a used furniture store, whether on consignment or for cash upfront, your items get to be displayed in an actual storefront, which means they’re out of the house and out of your hair.

But, you’ll often make substantially less money by giving your items to a used furniture store, in exchange for the convenience of the process.

24. Sell.com

One of the oldest e-commerce sites out there, Sell.com makes it easy to sell furniture to local buyers for just $1 a listing. Plus, listing an item on Sell.com means you can easily also advertise it on eBay, Google Products, and Big Commerce, so you’re more likely to find the right buyer for your furniture.

25. Viyet

Viyet is the high-end furniture lover’s online consignment shop. When you use Viyet, they send an actual assessor to your home to appraise the value of your furniture, all of which must be in new or very good condition.

While Viyet charges a 40% commission, they will list your items on their website and advertise it on social media to match you with potential buyers. Plus, interested buyers can even send you an offer and Viyet takes care of all the shipping logistics.
