The message from the market this week is much like last week’s. Despite the latest sequester deadline just two weeks away and the budget cuts to follow if we step on the tripwire that will trigger mandated government spending cuts, stocks have climbed to fresh recovery highs on indications the… Read More

The only change to our holdings since the last update was the Dollar Tree (DLTR) February 45 call option having expired. National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has strengthened since our last update and is once again above its 50-day moving average. We look for the shares to climb… Read More

We are buying approximately a 6 percent position in Energy XXI (EXXI). Although SAC Capital Advisors, the hedge fund headed by Steve Cohen, has recently been plagued by insider trading scandal, there’s no denying the fund’s long record of success. In the last 20 years, the average annual return is about 30 percent. (Cohen himself hasn’t been charged.) In SAC’s latest SEC filing, Cohen disclosed that SAC Capital had bought nearly 3 million additional shares of Energy XXI (EXXI), bringing the fund's total holding to more than 4 million shares. Shares of ViaSat (VSAT) surged 24 percent yesterday after the company reported much better than expected results for the final quarter of 2012. The Street had expected a 22 cent per share loss, but ViaSat actually earned profit of 4 cents per share (adjusted for a charge for early extinguishment… Read More

We are selling half of our position in Liquidity Services (LQDT). The stock will now be approximately 5 percent of our portfolio. We doubled up on Liquidity Services (LQDT) last week after the stock sharply sold off. We felt the stock was deeply oversold and bought more shares expecting a… Read More
