The success of Egypt’s revolt is emboldening people across North Africa and the Middle East. Daily protests in Algeria, Libya, Iran, Yemen and now Bahrain, host to the US Navy’s fifth fleet, are becoming daily events with citizens demanding changes from their autocratic leaders. Read More

We sold our equity position in Qualcomm (QCOM) after the stock hit our price target, netting a gain of 9 percent in 41 days.   Silver continues to move higher, adding to our gain in the Pan American Silver (PAAS) April 35 call option. We want to see the metal close above $31.13 which would constitute a breakout. Pan American, meanwhile, remains well below its January high. A close above $36 (and we could get there today) would pave the way for a rally back to its prior highs in the low $40s. Use a limit order to buy our recommended option on a dip to $2.80 per contract if you don’t own it yet.   The strength in the oil market, with Brent North Sea crude above $102 a barrel has helped propel Halliburton’s stock higher by about a point and a half in the past week. We look for the shares to probe their highs in the near term, with a breakout quite likely. The Halliburton (HAL) April 46 call option is a buy with a limit of $2.50 or better per contract.   Adobe Systems (ADBE) has gone essentially nowhere since we added it three weeks ago, despite a decent move in broad stock market over that timeframe and even more impressive gains in the tech sector in particular. We see several points of downside risk in the stock and believe that pullback will be realized sooner rather than later. The Adobe Systems July 34 put option is a buy for new clients with a limit order set at $2.90 per contract.   Express Scripts (ESRX) is poised to release its quarterly results after the market closes on Thursday, which should act as a positive catalyst for the stock. The Express Scripts May 60 call option is a buy for new clients at its current price.   Read More

Stocks are taking a bit of a breather today in quiet trading after rising in five of the last six sessions. Minor pullbacks aside, the primary trend should remain bullish thanks to a strengthening economy and an extremely accommodative Federal Reserve. Read More

We took profits on several trades last Friday, selling the Goldcorp April 41 call option for a gain of 5 percent, the Applied Materials April 16 call option for a profit of 11 percent and the Freeport Copper & Gold May 55 call option for a gain of 23 percent. Those gains occurred with holding periods of between three and seven days.   Today we also closed out our Avon Products April 28 put option for a 16 percent gain in less than two weeks.   Yesterday we added the Pan American Silver April 35 call option. Use a limit order to pay no more than $2.80 per contract. Silver is acting well and if it challenges its January high, Pan American will tack on several more points.     Oil prices (and oil-related stocks) are off on China’s rate hike with the expectation that slowing growth there will reduce demand for crude. China’s expansion, however, isn’t likely to be checked to any large degree and this is nothing more than what should prove to be a very brief pullback. The Halliburton April 46 call option is a buy at its current price.   Adobe Systems (ADBE) appears to have run out of steam, having put in a series of lower highs during the past several weeks. The Adobe Systems July 34 put option is a buy for new clients with a limit order set at $2.95 per contract.   Express Scripts (ESRX) hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in the past week. But we’re willing to hold our position in the Express Scripts May 60 call option heading up to the release of the company’s quarterly results on the 16th. With expectations relatively modest, if its profits just come in at the consensus level of 70 cents a share the stock could enjoy a nice bounce. The option is a buy at its current price. Read More
